IC 1538 does not exist. Bigourdan noted that he saw it only fleetingly on one night. He gave it an estimated position 17 seconds west, 2' 30" south of NGC 68 -- there is nothing there. There are a few 17th magnitude stars scattered around within 5-10 arcmin of his position, but all are too faint for him to have seen. This is most likely another of his "fausse images" (see e.g. NGC 2529 and NGC 2531).― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
