IC 1557 is not NGC 161; the MCG got it wrong, though I don't see how. The IC object was found by Herbert Howe at Chamberlin Observatory in Denver on the night of 6 November 1899. Howe plainly states "...in field with [NGC] 161", and Dreyer transfers this into IC2 as "nr 161". This seems pretty clear to me.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
