IC 1709 = NGC 568. Swift does not mention the NGC object in his observation from 4 September 1897. Since the galaxy is similar to others that he found in his far southern sky surveys from Lowe Observatory, the identity is virtually certain.
The much fainter companion object suggested by ESO as IC 1709 is unlikely to be Swift's object. It is near enough to NGC 568 that Swift would have noted it as a companion to the brighter galaxy.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
