IC 1761 was not seen by Lewis Swift as some have suggested (see NGC 768 for that story). Javelle discovered and measured it on 18 December 1897; he remeasured it on 20 November 1903. His comparison star was HD 12134 = BD -0 301 on both nights, and his observations pinpoint the galaxy to within five arcseconds.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
