Observing Notes

Harold Corwin

IC 1761 was not seen by Lewis Swift as some have suggested (see NGC 768 for that story). Javelle discovered and measured it on 18 December 1897; he remeasured it on 20 November 1903. His comparison star was HD 12134 = BD -0 301 on both nights, and his observations pinpoint the galaxy to within five arcseconds.
