IC 1787 = IC 217. As with IC 1782, I'm left wondering how either Swift or Dreyer thought Swift's object to be a "nova". The position is 1.2 arcmin different from Javelle's, and the descriptions (Swift: "eeF, eeE, a ray ..." Javelle: "F, pL, E ns.") are similar enough that a flare should have gone off in one or the other's mind. I suspect that Swift's "eeF" versus Javelle's "F" mislead one or both of them to ignore the near-coincidence of position.
Or maybe they just missed this one. Whatever happened, the galaxy has two IC numbers.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
