IC 290 = IC 1884. IC 290 was found near Algol by Swift on 11 September 1888 along with several other galaxies. His positions are not particularly good, so Barnard thought that he discovered the group when he was working in the area sometime later. He did not publish his observations, but sent them directly to Dreyer. Fortunately, his positions are good in this case, so we don't need to appeal to the original observations for verification.
The other galaxies involved are IC 1883 = NGC 1213 (also found by Swift, but in October of 1884), IC 292 = IC 1887, IC 293 = IC 1888, and IC 294 = IC 1889. IC 295 and IC 296 are also supposed to be in the area, but are not. See them for some speculation.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
