NGC 1412 = IC 1981. While this is the only galaxy near John Herschel's position that he could have seen, the declination is far enough off to cause some concern (the RA is correct). Fortunately, John Herschel's description is appropriate, especially his note "... has a * sf dist 2'". The star is there.
The copy of the sweep in the Herschel Archives suggests from internal evidence that the north polar distance was properly reduced, so the incorrect declination probably results from a mistaken reading at the telescope.― NGC Notes by Harold Corwin
