IC 2107 = NGC 1707, which see, is an astersim of four stars (a fifth, considerably fainter is just north). Bigourdan, misled by John Herschel's 30 second error in the RA of NGC 1707, measured a star which he thought a bit nebulous (it isn't) and called it NGC 1707. Eleven years later, he returned to the field and found the real NGC 1707, but still not recognizing John Herschel's error, put it into one of his lists of new nebulae. Thus, the IC number.
Reinmuth was apparently the first to make the connection between the two numbers.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
