NGC 3040 is a triple system, though Stephan only measured and described the brightest. Holmberg has the brightest two in his catalogue of double galaxies from 1937, though does not note the NGC number. His number is Ho. 148 for the pair; Ho. 148a is NGC 3040.― NGC Notes by Harold Corwin
