IC 696 is the largest of a group of galaxies including IC 698 and IC 699. All these, and many others, were seen on an early plate taken by Max Wolf at Heidelberg in 1906; the full of nebulae that Wolf found on that plate are in his 7th list, merged into the 2nd IC. Many of the "nebulae" that Wolf found are, in fact, stars near the plate limit. See IC 2630 for more about this particular plate.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
