IC 3279 is two stars, oriented very nearly east-west. Schwassmann describes his object as "pF or pB, S, perhaps 2 stars, p 11.8, f 10.8". While his magnitudes are estimates, the eastern star is indeed the brighter and thus secures the identification.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
