There are two galaxies near Javelle's position [PGC 56769 and PGC 56768], so the usual question comes up: Which did he see? The northern is the brighter by about a magnitude [PGC 56769], so that is the obvious one to select. Reducing Javelle's position with respect to the Hipparcos position (and proper motion), we find that it, too, suggests that the northern of the galaxies is his object.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
