IC 1261 is a double galaxy in a poor cluster. Swift's position, just an arcminute north of the pair, is good enough to recover the pair, but is not good enough to tell us which of the objects Swift actually saw. The eastern galaxy is the brighter of the two, so I presume it is that one that he saw. Perhaps the western added a bit to the perception of nebulosity here.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
