IC 1008 = IC 4414. This is one of the 52 objects found by T. H. Safford that Dreyer put into the Appendix to the NGC. Later, Dreyer merged them into IC1 so that they would not be overlooked. As with IC 200, there appears to be a rather large error in RA, in this case, +1.5 minutes of time. There are no other galaxies nearby that Safford could have reasonably seen with the 18.5-inch Clark refractor at Dearborn. Given that, and the expectation of a relatively poor position, the identity is pretty secure. Safford gives no description beyond the "pF" that appears in the IC. So, given that the galaxies are approximately of equal brightness -- and are a close interacting pair -- I have put the IC number on both objects.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
