IC 3178 is a star, probably with some extra plate grain mixed in with the image. It shows clearly on a contact positive print of the original plate, with IC 3179 (a galaxy) not very far to the southwest.
The galaxy is sometimes called IC 3178, and a much fainter galaxy on a bit to the southwest is labeled IC 3179. However, there is no trace of this fainter galaxy on the print, while the brighter galaxy and the star are about equally bright and have similar sizes.― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
