IC 3969 is a triple galaxy -- with a foreground star just west -- in the core of Abell 1657. Wolf found two other nebulae (IC 3971 and IC 3978) -- and a star, possibly blended with two galaxies (IC 3984) -- nearby, and suggested that they formed a chain. He encompassed all with a single mark on his plate; only IC 3969 and IC 3984 are clearly visible on the print. See IC 3636 for more about the discovery plate.
[The three are PGC 1600532, PGC 3799985, and PGC 4538097]― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
