Though Lunt's position is off the galaxy by 20 seconds in RA (see IC 5224), there is no mistaking this large, beautiful southern barred spiral.
This is one of those objects that we feel John Herschel must have surely seen during his South African years, but there is no trace of it in his sweeps. Its arms do have quite a low surface brightness, so it would have been only the bar that John Herschel would have picked up, but still...― IC Notes by Harold Corwin
