Observing Notes

Harold Corwin

NGC 7832 = IC 5386. This one is another blunder by Swift (his position for the IC object is 18 seconds too large and 3 arcminutes too far south), but also by Howe and Dreyer who evidently did not check the NGC. Howe's accurate position is only three seconds of time off the NGC position from John Herschel, and Swift's description "pB, pS, vE" should have caught everyone's eyes.

But it didn't, so the galaxy now has an IC number as well as an NGC entry.
