Observing Notes

Harold Corwin

IC 3417 is a star about 2.3 arcmin north of NGC 4470. It is often incorrectly equated with the galaxy (Adelaide Ames was apparently the first to do this), but Schwassmann's position is exactly on the star. In addition, his description "eF, vS, ?*" fits perfectly. Finally, Schwassmann has two other entries in his list for NGC 4470, both correctly identified as the NGC object.
